Assilah (or Asilah, or Arzila – the Berber form, or Arcila) is presumed to have no certain visual evidence, was born around the 9th – 10th century. In the early years of the (16th) century the Medina, which today has the shape of a parallelogram, was structured according to the scheme of the Portuguese military cities, due to the occupation by the Crown. Merging with the Arab character, the tidy streets are soon replaced by winding and dead-end alleys Access gates and bastions are the characteristics of this splendid Medina which directly overlooks the Atlantic. It’s a bit like walking inside a medieval vessel in the middle of the ocean.
The beaches of Assilah
Assilah is also famous for its long beaches of fine golden sand where it is possible to go on horseback or camel rides. The beautiful beaches of Rmilat, also known as Paradise beach, 30 minutes from the city, Afriquia Beach, just 3 kilometers north of Asilah, and Briech Beach a little further north.
Assilah: time that passes slowly
In Assilah time has its own rhythms! it flows slowly, so you can relax body and mind, accompanied by the sound of the sea and the Muezzin who recalls the spirit to its natural source. sound of surrounded by the color of brushstrokes. The immense ocean, at high tide, the waves crash against the protective walls of the Medina; when calm returns, the sea retreats and leaves room for particular colors and lights. They are approximately 1200 m, the surrounding walls can reach 7 m. tall, Bori Krikia, a protrusion of the bastion that turns into a terrace, suitable for taking a selfie at sunset, your legs dangling from the wall and the sun falling asleep in the deep waters of the Atlantic. The medina is free from any means of circulation, allowing a moment’s break before returning to the chaos of the other cities of Morocco!
Assilah: what to see
From the small port, you can access one of the entrance gates to the Medina: the distance to travel is quite short and is delimited on the left by the walls of the Mosque with the octagonal-shaped Minaret.
In the small square, we find the Menagem Tower, built by the Portuguese and overlooking the sea.
There is a small cemetery built next to the Sidi marabout Ahmed Ibn Moussa, on a platform outside the ramparts.
The tombs are covered with ceramics, which suggest a terrace of mosaics
The most important ports are:
• Bab al-Homer (Gate of the Earth), the main gate, which is located in a very lively point where the restaurants are lined up one after the other, • the Sea Gate, on the side of the Menagem Tower • the Bab al-Kasbah Gate, in the northern part of the Medina, surrounded by gardens. speaking of the festival we first mentioned the Raïssouli Palace: where, on the first floor, there is a beautiful hall decorated with zellij tiles, painted wood and plaster chiseled.

Assilah: city of artists
In the Raissouni Palace, Hassan II Cultural Center, between the ancient walls and the bastions, there is the Foundation that organizes the Artists’ Festival (the Moussem of the Artists). The Moussem (seasonal festival with cultural and religious connotations) came to life in 1978, when two artists and intellectuals from the city, Mohamed Benaïssa (former Moroccan Foreign Minister) and Mohamed Melehi, had the idea of creating an artistic event, which could bring back luster to a city that was experiencing a moment of decadence. Supported by King Hassan II, they gave life to a tradition that has been carried on every year for decades now. Over time, this Festival has seen the participation of, among others, two Italian artistic excellences: Alberto Moravia and Ettore Scola!
The Festival takes place from 21 June to 15 July every summer: for the occasion the inhabitants of Assilah paint all the walls with white lime to make room for the new works. School children also participate, contributing with their paintings to enrich the city walls with imaginative and creative colours.

Assilah (o Asilah, o Arzila – la forma berbera, o Arcila) si presupone non avendo testimonianze visive certe, nasce intorno al IX – X Sec.
Nei primi anni del (XVI) Sec. la Medina, che oggi ha la forma di un parallelogramma, viene strutturata secondo lo schema delle città militari portoghesi, a causa della occupazione da parte della Corona.
Fondendosi con il caratere arabo le viuzze ordinate vengono ben presto sostituite da vicoli tortuosi e ciechi
Porte di accesso e Bastioni, sono le caratteristiche di questa splendida Medina che affaccia direttamente sull’Atlantico. È un po’ come passeggiare all’interno di un vascello medievale in mezzo all’oceano.
Le spiagge di Assilah

Assilah: città degli artisti
Nel Palazzo Raissouni, Centro Culturale Hassan II,Tra le antiche mura e i Bastioni,si trova la Fondazione che organizza il Festival degli Artisti (il Moussem degli Artisti). Il Moussem (festival stagionale dalle conotazioni culturali e religiose) prende vita nel 1978, quando due artisti e intellettuali della città, Mohamed Benaïssa (ex ministro degli Esteri marocchino) e Mohamed Melehi, ebbero l’idea di creare un evento artistico, che potesse riportare lustro ad una città che stava conoscendo un momento di decadenza.Appoggiati da Re Hassan II, diedero vita ad una tradizione che viene portata avanti ogni anno, ormai da decenni.
Questo Festival, nel tempo ha visto la partecipazione tra gli altri di due eccellenze artistiche italiane: Alberto Moravia ed Ettore Scola!
Il Festival si svolge dal 21 giugno al 15 luglio di ogni estate: per l’occasione gli abitanti di Assilah, dipingono a calce bianca tutte le pareti, per far spazio alle nuove opere.
Partecipano anche i ragazzi delle scuole, che contribuiscono con i loro dipinti,ad arrichire le mura della città di colori fantasiosi e creativi.
Assilah: che cosa vedere
Dal piccolo porto, si accede ad una delle Porte di entrata alla Medina: il tratto da percorrere è abbastanza breve ed è delimitato a sinistra dai muri della Moschea con il Minareto a forma ottagonale.
Nella piazzetta, troviamo la Torre Menagem, costruita dai portoghesi e che affaccia sul mare.
È presente un piccolo cimitero costruito accanto al marabutto Sidi Ahmed Ibn Moussa, su una piattaforma fuori dai bastioni.
Le tombe sono ricoperte di ceramica, che lasciano pensare ad una terrazza di mosaici.
Le porte più importanti sono:
Bab al-Homer (Porta della Terra), la porta principale, che si trova in un punto molto animato dove i ristoranti sono uno in fila all’altro,
la Porta del Mare, dal lato della Torre Menagem
la Porta Bab al-Kasbah, nella parte Nord della Medina, circondata da giardini.a proposito del festival abbiamo accennato prima al Palazzo Raïssouli: dove,al primo piano, è presente un bellissimo salone decorato con le piastrelle zellij, legno dipinto e intonaco cesellato.
